As many people are suffering from hair loss, specialist has come up with various medications to prevent hair loss. Rogaine (Minoxidil) is one of them.
Minoxidil was a table that was first prescribed for high blood pressure. Doctors noticed that people who use this drug have grown new hair. So the drug is reformulated for the purpose of hair loss. FDA approved Minoxidil for treating the male pattern of hair loss and still the only FDA approved drug for treating female pattern of hair loss.
Minoxidil is a prescribed medication for treating androgen tic alopecia and alopecia areata. This is available in 2 percent solution and 5-percentage solution. The makers have recommended women to use 2% solution, as the FDA has not approved for 5% solution.
Minoxidil is to be applied twice in a day to the scalp that needs to be treated. The actual process of hair growth is not yet identified. The medication is known to be a potent “vasodilator” means it helps the walls of blood vessels to relax and expand, so that the blood flows through them and helps in blood circulation on the scalp.
This medication works effectively in treating the baldness that occurs on the top or crown of the head. As per studies, it is proven that 48% of men who has used this medication continuously have seen the regrowth of hair on the treated hair. The similar results are also seen in the case of women.
Minoxidil is a cure but not a treatment for hair loss and need be used for a long period. The side effects related to the usage of this drug are rare and generally minor. Most common side effects are scalp irritation or itching. Rarely some people may experience facial hair growth.

Hair loss is the unwelcomed and unintentional shedding of hair from the head. It has various causes that depend of the age, gender and other physical factors of the person involved.
Male-Pattern Baldness
Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. It is scientifically called androgenetic alopecia. Research revealed that the main cause for this occurrence is genetics. It appears mostly in men after their teen years. The follicles of the hair are affected by a testosterone byproduct which accrues there gradually. As a result, the follicles become weaker and can no longer sustain hairs.
Male-pattern baldness works in the following way: the first follicles to suffer are the ones on the temples and on the top of the scalp. The hairs are still there but they are small and weak. This receding area is gradually growing until it occupied most of the head. The horse shoe pattern is formed. The hair follicles around the years and the posterior of the scalp do not have the same enzyme responsible for the worsening of the follicle. Therefore, hair is maintained in those areas.
Female-Pattern Baldness
Female-pattern baldness is generally identical to the process in men. The difference is in the fact that it is less complete, more diffuse and in most cases the frontal line of the hair on the forehead is sustained.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is a condition where hair is lost from some area of the body most commonly from the scalp. It is considered to be an autoimmune disease. What are typical here are clearly visible small patches of bald space on different places on the scalp. This condition spontaneously remits, but there are cases where it led to the complete falling off the hair on the head.
Nutrition
Lack or very poor and limited nutrition can be a very decisive factor for the rapid development of hair loss.
